Best Things to Do at Christmas Markets in Belgrade
Beyond the individual festival locations, there are several activities worth adding to a festive Belgrade itinerary.
1. Explore Illuminated Christmas Decorations
One of the most enjoyable activities is walking through decorated festival spaces after sunset. Winter Fairytale is particularly popular for illuminated Christmas trees, festive displays and winter-themed installations.
2. Try Traditional Serbian Winter Food
Belgrade's seasonal events are a good opportunity to enjoy local specialties and familiar festive treats. Look for ćevapi, grilled sausages, sweet palačinke, roasted chestnuts and other snacks offered by participating vendors.
3. Drink Mulled Wine or Hot Chocolate
Mulled wine, known locally as kuvano vino, is a popular winter drink. Visitors who prefer non-alcoholic drinks can look for hot chocolate, tea and other warm refreshments.
4. Watch Live Music and Performances
Music is an important part of Belgrade's festive season. Depending on the festival, visitors may encounter live bands, DJs, choirs and seasonal performances. Always check the daily program before choosing your visit time.
5. Go Ice Skating
Ice skating has been one of the popular winter attractions at previous Winter Fairytale festivals. If the rink returns for the 2026–2027 season, it can be a good activity for couples and families. Check availability and whether skating or equipment rental requires payment.
6. Discover Christmas Activities for Children
Belgrade's municipal winter celebrations have previously included puppet and theater performances, storytelling, creative workshops, games and encounters with Santa Claus. Families should check which location is hosting activities on their intended visit date, as the same program does not operate continuously at every venue.
7. Look for Christmas Gifts and Local Souvenirs
Explore participating seasonal vendors for gift ideas, decorations and small souvenirs. For a wider variety of shops, combine the festive events with a visit to Knez Mihailova Street or Galerija Belgrade.
8. Take Christmas Photographs
The decorated areas of Belgrade Waterfront and the city's historic landmarks provide attractive locations for winter photography. For festive lighting, visit after dark. For architectural photography at Saint Sava Temple or Republic Square, daytime offers a different perspective.
9. Experience Serbian Orthodox Christmas
Visitors staying in Belgrade until January 7 can experience Serbian Christmas traditions that differ from those celebrated on December 25 in many other European countries. Religious services and local customs are an important part of this period, although not every winter market remains open until Orthodox Christmas.
Best Neighborhoods to Explore During Christmas in Belgrade
A visit to Belgrade's winter events can be combined with exploring several different districts.
Zemun is not one of the five confirmed or previously documented winter event locations covered in this guide, but it is an excellent additional neighborhood to explore during a longer winter visit.
How to Get Around Belgrade Christmas Markets
Many of Belgrade's central winter event locations are accessible on foot, especially Republic Square, Park Vojvode Vuka and the surrounding Stari Grad neighborhood. For longer journeys between Belgrade Waterfront, Tašmajdan Park and Saint Sava Temple, public transport or a taxi may be more comfortable in cold weather. Belgrade's public transport network covers much of the city, although routes and operating arrangements can change during holiday celebrations. Visitors should check the latest schedules and allow extra travel time on busy evenings, particularly around December 31.
One-Day Belgrade Christmas Market Itinerary
If you have one day to explore the city's festive locations, consider this route:

Start with a visit to Saint Sava Temple and explore the surrounding Vračar neighborhood.

This itinerary combines sightseeing with seasonal activities, but the order should be adjusted to match actual event schedules.
